Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is offering multiple DevOps Internship Program opportunities for undergraduate students during Summer 2027. The internship is designed for students interested in DevOps, platform engineering, cloud-native application deployment, CI/CD automation, Kubernetes, containerization, infrastructure automation, software development, and production software operations.
Selected interns will gain practical experience by contributing to real-world DevOps and platform engineering projects while developing technical skills that support their academic and professional goals.
About the DevOps Internship
The Summer 2027 DevOps Internship Program provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to work on practical projects involving modern software development and infrastructure technologies.
Depending on the assignment, interns may contribute to projects involving:
- DevOps and platform engineering
- Containerization
- CI/CD pipeline development
- Kubernetes-based application deployment
- Cloud-native application deployment
- Git version control
- Infrastructure automation
- Web services
- Large language model (LLM) deployment and testing
- Persistent data services
- Monitoring and operational practices

Key Responsibilities
- Learn and apply fundamentals of Git version control.
- Gain practical experience with containerization and Docker-based workflows.
- Learn and contribute to CI/CD pipeline development.
- Work with Kubernetes-based application deployment.
- Contribute to real-world DevOps and platform engineering projects.
- Assist with web services and cloud-native application projects.
- Support infrastructure automation initiatives.
- Contribute to production software operations.
- Assist with deploying and testing large language models (LLMs).
- Work with persistent data services depending on project assignment.
- Develop or improve automation tools and deployment workflows.
- Assist with monitoring and operational practices.
- Contribute to operational documentation and technical procedures.
- Participate in code reviews, software testing, and software development lifecycle activities.
- Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions.
- Attend relevant technical seminars, with at least one seminar expected per week.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Be a continuing college or university student in good standing.
- Be enrolled at an accredited institution.
- Be pursuing an undergraduate degree in:
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
- Data Science
- Machine Learning
- Cybersecurity
- Other related STEM fields
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Be 18 years of age or older at the start of the internship.
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt and work effectively in challenging situations.
- Demonstrate resilience and problem-solving skills.
- Have the ability to apply basic computational science and/or mathematical principles to technical problems.
- Have effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Be able to present technical concepts and ideas.
- Have experience using personal computers and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Be able to work effectively in a team environment.
Academic Eligibility
This internship is specifically intended for continuing undergraduate students.
Students who will be starting a graduate degree program in Fall 2027 are directed to apply for the separate Computing Scholar Graduate position rather than this undergraduate internship.
Internship Schedule
The Summer 2027 internship program offers several possible internship periods:
- May 17, 2027 – August 6, 2027
- May 24, 2027 – August 13, 2027
- June 14, 2027 – September 3, 2027
- June 21, 2027 – September 10, 2027
The positions will close to applicants on January 15, 2027.
Computing mentors are expected to make their Summer 2027 selections by February 5, 2027.
Work Arrangement
Depending on the specific assignment, the internship may offer a hybrid work schedule, combining in-person and virtual work.
Interns may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week depending on project and assignment requirements.
Compensation
The position uses an academic step structure. Pay placement is determined by the intern's most recently completed academic year.
- Job Code 705.1 – Undergraduate Student: $23.26–$31.62 per hour
- Job Code 714.0 – Intern Nonexempt: $26.22–$33.38 per hour

Security & Eligibility
This position does not require a security clearance and does not generally require U.S. citizenship.
However, candidates must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Assignments exceeding 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year require a federal background investigation and Personal Identity Verification process.
Pre-Employment Requirements
External applicants selected for the position must complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. The requirement includes testing for marijuana because LLNL operates under applicable federal requirements.
Certain assignments may also require compliance with Department of Energy restrictions concerning personal and wireless devices in designated Limited Areas.
