Role Overview – Linux Kernel Engineer (Ubuntu)

The Linux Kernel Engineer role is a core technical position within the Canonical Kernel Team, responsible for building, optimizing, and securing the Ubuntu Linux kernel across a wide range of hardware platforms.

This includes everything from embedded devices and servers to cloud hyperscalers, mainframes, and supercomputers.

You will collaborate with major silicon providers, hardware manufacturers, and cloud leaders to ensure Ubuntu kernels are production-ready, secure, and optimized for performance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize Ubuntu Linux kernels across platforms and architectures
  • Collaborate with globally distributed teams and external silicon/cloud partners
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel-related issues raised by customers and the community
  • Own delivery of one or more Ubuntu kernel variants
  • Enhance CI/CD pipelines and automation tools for kernel testing and deployment
  • Submit, review, and integrate kernel patches with upstream maintainers
  • Work on specialized areas such as:
    • Confidential computing & next-gen security primitives
    • Real-Time & Low Latency kernel variants
    • Kernel Livepatch (fixing vulnerabilities without reboots)
    • Virtualization, containers, storage (Ceph, DRBD), and networking performance

Qualifications & Skills

Essential Requirements:

  • Proficiency in C programming (Python or Go a plus)
  • Strong knowledge of Linux internals & operating system concepts
  • Hands-on experience with Ubuntu/Debian environments
  • Version control expertise (Git)
  • Excellent communication in professional English (written & spoken)
  • Ability to travel internationally 2–4 times/year for company events

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel upstream processes & release cycles
  • Background in performance engineering, CI/CD automation, and security
  • Contributions to open-source projects (especially kernel-related)
