About the Role

Join the Human Genetics Informatics (HGI) team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute as a Systems Administrator & Software Developer (Grade 3) or a Junior Systems Administrator & Software Developer (Grade 4), depending on your career stage.

This role blends Linux systems administration, cloud infrastructure, and software development, supporting researchers with cutting-edge tools and environments. You’ll work independently and collaboratively to streamline data pipelines, optimize compute resources, and deliver scalable solutions to enable life-changing science.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain reproducible software environments for researchers.
  • Track and optimize storage and compute resources across projects.
  • Manage cloud-based Trusted Research Environments (TRE) on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Provision and troubleshoot applications on OpenStack using infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible).
  • Apply strong Linux administration skills to ensure uptime and scalability.
  • Contribute to software development, including scripting, debugging, testing, and tool integration.

Essential Skills

  • Awareness of Linux software compilation and installation.
  • Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub.
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (Python/Go preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate across scientific and technical teams.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to learn new technologies.

Additional Skills (for Grade 3 – Systems Administrator & Software Developer)

  • Advanced experience in Linux system administration and software installation.
  • Proven knowledge of programming languages with ability to learn Python/Go.
  • Strong analytical and creative thinking skills to design and implement solutions.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in team discussions.

Salary Range

  • Systems Administrator & Software Developer (Grade 3): £33,155 – £39,388
  • Junior Systems Administrator & Software Developer (Grade 4): £28,247 – £33,557
